This qualification will provide successful students with the skills, knowledge and training that is required to apply for registration as an Enrolled Nurse with the National Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). Entry requirements

Students must be a minimum of 17 years of age on the day of the course commencement.

International Student specific entry requirements:
English: For students whose first language is not English, the required minimum English language levels is IELTS 6.5 or equivalent, with no individual score less than 6.0 or equivalent assessment.    NOTE: Diploma graduates from non-English speaking countries who want to stay and work in Australia must provide an IELTS test report with a minimum score of 7.0 (in all bands) to the Queensland Nursing Council.

Academic: The minimum requirements can be one of the following:

  • Certificate II or III – 10 years of schooling (or equivalent) with passes in mathematics and English
  • Certificate IV or Diploma – 12 years of schooling (or equivalent) with passes in mathematics and English
  • Mature –aged entry with work experience in a related field

Please send certified and translated copies of your English results and academic certificates to the International Student Unit together with your completed and signed application form.

Prior to commencement of course, students must obtain:

  • Must obtain a Blue Card
  • A current Australian Federal Police National Police Check
  • Undertake a Hepatitis B immunisation course or provide proof of Hepatitis B immunisation

Resources required

Resources included in the tuition fees are student orientation handbook and relevant learning materials such as study guides, one nursing shirt, assessment requirements, handouts and workbooks. Students have access to library resources, computers, the internet and a personal email account at TAFE Queensland North. Students may need to purchase stationery items such as paper, pens and a USB drive. Students are required to wear full uniform including nursing shirt, black pants and black closed in shoes when attending classes, lab sessions and vocational placements.

Prior to commencement of course, students must obtain:

  • A Positive Notice for Child Related Employment (Blue Card) from Commission for Children and Young people and Child Guardian
  • A current Australian Federal Police Check
  • Undertake a Hepatitis B immunisation course or provide proof of Hepatitis B immunisation

Timetable

International students will attend over 73 weeks (54 weeks full time delivery, 19 weeks of holidays).

Delivery may include lectures, practical sessions, tutorials, online delivery and observations.  Some lessons will be delivered in the simulated hospital ward at TAFE Queensland North. You may be required to attend evening classes and/or weekend activities/functions. You must abide by industry and/or TAFE Queensland standards and may have to remove jewellery and/or body piercings before industry visits, or entering classrooms.

Assessment is competency based (practical) and continuous, and is considered an integral part of your learning and development. As appropriate, exams, assignments, projects, practical tests and student presentations are used. You must successfully complete all subjects to progress to the next course or obtain the qualification.

Placement

All students must complete a minimum of 400 hours (10 weeks) of vocational placement.  This is spread across the 18 months; two weeks in Semester one, four weeks in both Semester 2 and 3.  TAFE North will procure placements on behalf of students, but it is the student's responsibility to provide their own transport and accommodation if required.  Students should expect to attend placement away from their home base. TAFE North endeavours to give students as much notice as possible for clinical placement dates, although this is determined by industry.  On occasion students may only receive two weeks notice.

To obtain this qualification students must successfully complete 20 core competencies and five elective competencies plus the three sets of vocational placement.

HLT54115 Diploma of Nursing

The Diploma of Nursing program is a medically endorsed program designed by the nursing profession to prepare graduates for employment as Enrolled Nurses, and as professional development for people already employed in the industry.

Graduates of a TAFE Queensland Diploma of Nursing may be eligible to receive up to one year credit in a Bachelor of Nursing or Bachelor of Nursing Science at James Cook University, Central Queensland University, Griffith University, Queensland University of Technology, University of Sunshine Coast, University of Southern Queensland and the University of Queensland.
